Design
Based on Markforged's 4th Gen Composite 3D printing technology. System is stable, and proven to work. By bounding metal powder into a plastic matrix, we have eliminated safety risks, associated with traditional metal printing, while enableing new features like closed-cell infill, for reduced weight and cost.
Technology
Metal X combines two mature technologies, plastic 3D printing and traditional Metal Injection Molding (MIM) technique, to create metal parts. Just like traditional Metal Injection Molding, the material comes in a metal-binder matrix. In this binder matrix, the material is very easy to be shaped into any desired forms and shapes.
Extruding the part
Metal X 3D printer works just like other Markforged's composite platforms. It extrudes the metal-binder spool to form a green part that can have unlimited shapes and forms. The green part can be treated as any other plastic parts, as the plastics inside the binder is holding the shape. Users can polish the part before we wash and sinter the parts away.
From Green Part to Metal Part
The concept behind washing and sintering steps are identical to traditional Metal Injection Molding (MIM) processes. In fact, the green part can be sintered with traditional metal injection molding furances to create the same results. Because of this, the flexibility for you to scale up metal printing parts is a true advantage.
Markforged's Sinter 1 oven is a small format sinter oven. It's meant to provide you an economical means to create metal parts in small batches. Small also means better scalability for you too. Because of the size, operating the sinter oven becomes a simple task as well.
